Aalsterse vlaai, a kind of breadpudding

Aalsterse vlaai is an ancient traditional pastries from Aalst. Aalst is the second largest city in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The "vlaai" is a type of bread pudding that was originally baked to eliminate food surpluses. "Vlaai" can be eaten as a pie, but can also be eaten between sandwiches.
    Ingredients
    • 250g of toast
    • 250g of gingerbread
    • 1,25 ml of milk
    • 200 ml of candy syrup
    • 2 tbsp of cinnamon
    • Optional : some sugar

    Full recipe

    1. Crumble 2 packages of toast (250g) in a big bowl + 250g of gingerbread
    2. Add 1,25 liter of milk
    3. Combine and mash well
    4. Add 200g of candy syrup and 2 tbsp of cinnamon and combine
    5. Transfer the mixture into a greased oven dish
    6. Add a good layer of candy syrup and sprinkle some cinnamon on top
    7. And into a pre-heated oven (180°C) for 1 hour
